Bruce feelin' it
As was the case with many of the best shows of '91-'94, I missed this one by one night, as my first show was the night before (still a good show but rightly overshadowed by this one).
I'm in the middle of revisiting this period on Archive and this stands out as a great example of Bruce really starting to feel like part of the band. In addition to the Dark Star jams, you can hear Bruce suggesting the theme in various places, including some fills during the beginning of Truckin'. You could tell watching them then and it's also obvious listening today that Jerry got off on playing with Bruce, who was so versatile. One suspects it even influenced Jerry's song selections, like bringing back Might As Well to hear Bruce's special stamp on the barroom piano style that Keith did so well in the 70s. No coincidence Loose Lucy comes back during this time period, too, as Bruce really rocks on that one. New Speedway, too.
I say this not to knock Vince. He wasn't my favorite by a long shot, and I wish I'd been born a little earlier to have seen Brent live. But I think under the circumstances — essentially being rushed into the band so they could keep their massive fall tour commitments in '90 — he did the best he could. I think his keyboard playing is probably a little underrated because he had to share the stage with Bruce during this period and few would come out of such a comparison well (not to mention the much-discussed MIDI issues affecting his tone). And in this show you can hear him growing into a lot of the high harmonies as well.
I often look back at my time seeing shows as having missed the best of the Dead. And by and large that's true, particularly into '93 and '94. But listening again to summer/fall '91 changes my outlook a bit, as there were a lot of good Dead shows during that period. This is one of the best.
